ntroduction to Shanxi University
Shanxi University is one of the oldest institutions of higher education in China, tracing its origins back to the Shanxi Grand Academy, which was established in 1902. Today, it is recognized as a national "Double First-class" university and receives joint support from both the Ministry of Education and the People's Government of Shanxi Province.
Situated in Taiyuan, the capital city of Shanxi Province with a history spanning over 2,500 years, Shanxi University encompasses three campuses: Wucheng Campus, Dongshan Campus, and Dadongguan Campus. The total area covered by these campuses is approximately 2,955 mu (about 197 hectares), with a construction area totaling 1.332 million square meters. The value of teaching and research equipment at the university amounts to 3.7 billion yuan. Additionally, the university library serves as a key protection unit for ancient books in China and boasts an extensive collection that includes 2,563,900 physical volumes along with digital resources totaling 15,479,500 items across 212 databases.
The faculty at Shanxi University comprises 2,158 full-time members, among them are 1,404 educators who hold advanced academic titles—including more than 100 nationally recognized talents. Currently offered are 19 doctoral degree programs and 63 master's degree programs.
Philosophy and Physics have been designated as national "Double First-class" disciplines under development. Furthermore, Philosophy of Science and Technology along with Optics have been identified as key national disciplines. Ten fields—namely Chemistry, Engineering, Materials Science, Environment and Ecology, Physics, Computer Science and Technology, Botany and Zoology, Agricultural Science, Social Sciences, Pharmacology and Toxicology—rank within the top 1% according to Essential Science Indicators (ESI).
Shanxi University offers a diverse array of undergraduate specialties numbering at least eighty-seven across ten academic categories: liberal arts, history, philosophy, science, engineering, economics, management, law, pedagogy and art. Among these offerings are forty-two national first-class undergraduate specialties alongside thirty-one provincial first-class specialties.
Shanxi University has placed a strong emphasis on international educational cooperation, establishing collaborative relationships with over 100 universities and research institutions worldwide. This partnership facilitates extensive collaboration in various areas, including discipline development, personnel training, scientific research innovation, and teacher training. The university has also established the Charlotte Chinese Language Center in the United States and a Confucius Classroom at the East Timor-Leste Business School. Each year, more than 400 international students from over 40 countries pursue their studies at the university.
